THE laying down of the 5,092-kilometer (km) Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) Submarine Terrestrial (Best) Cable System has started.

"The connectivity in terms of information communication technology (ICT) is already ongoing. The laying of cable in the water has not yet started but the laying of cable by land [has already started]," Romeo Montenegro, Mindanao Development Authority (Minda) director for investment promotions and public affairs, told Sun.Star Davao in an interview.

The Best Cable System, initiated by the Best Cable Corp. (BCC), is a high bandwidth cable system of over 5,092 km that will link BIMP-Eaga with extension to Guam and will connect with United States and the rest of the Asean.

The cable system will start in Brunei going to Sabah, Malaysia then to Mindanao, Palau, and Guam.

Montenegro said the land cabling will link Brunei then Sabah, Malaysia.

The cable system will be constructed by the China National Technical Import and Export Corporation (CNTIC) of China and the NMV Development Corporation of Canada, wherein they entered a contract with BCC on October 2014.

The project is expected to be operational by 2016 and an initial equipped capacity of 2.4 terabytes per second.

Montenegro said it will give Mindanao and the Philippines a big boost in terms of internet connectivity.

"We are looking forward for to the project since it will provide redundancy of high speed internet connectivity," he said.

Earlier, Montenegro said the Best Cable System will ready the Philippines for the growing industry of e-commerce, e-tradind, and electronic transactions. He also said they are seeing this as a venue to invite more ICT investors to come to Mindanao with the improved internet connectivity.
